$73K in Profit per Year for a Generic Drug!!!

Unfortunately, I have to withdrawal my accolades for Accredo, somehow they are not able to add in increments of 30 and even after hours on the phone over 2 weeks want to deliver my medication 10 days after I will be out of it, this is stress and healthcare waste!

While on hold, I decided to check out Mark Cuban’s pharmacy at the recommendation of a friend (CostPlusDrugs.com). Lo and behold I can get my prescription WITHOUT insurance for $94 for 90 days.  I am paying out of pocket $240 per month. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how much my company was paying for the drug….$6,150 for one month! To summarize on a yearly basis:

–        $376 per year with Mark Cuban and no insurance

–        $73,800 per year with insurance (and the only way to get the drug with insurance is through Accredo, a whole separate topic)

Mark Cuban states his margin is 15% so everything above that is excess margin that the speciality pharmacy and manufacturers are making; how is this even allowed?

What is worse, my out of pocket is maxed so I pay nothing but my employer pays $6.2K a month. The incentives are misaligned for the average consumer.

Thank you Mark Cuban for being a positive agitator for change (but I think we need to aim bigger than just pharmacy)!
